Raising a pre-teen has been a unique experience, especially since Colton is our first. He feels things are pretty unfair. For example, last night he was grounded for hurting Whitney's arm. He felt it was her fault and thus she deserved it. After hearing both sides of the story it was determined that though Whitney shouldn't have blocked him, he still had a choice and he chose to hurt her arm. Because he wasn't sorry or even felt bad that he had bruised her arm I felt I had no choice but to ground him.
He spent two hours crying, pounding in his room and finally playing "Had a Bad Day" on repeat over and over. After explaining why he was grounded I finally had to take the CD cord to end the annoying repeat of the song and started out his room. He cried back. "You want us to be like Jesus but you aren't." After stifling a chuckle I asked what he meant, to which he replied..."Jesus wouldn't have grounded me for not being sorry, he would have looked angry at me and walked away."
Ok by now I was really having to hold back uncontrollable laughter and try to help this poor boy see why he was in the wrong and why Jesus wouldn't have approved of his hurting his sister. In desperation he responded that maybe he should just run away since we obviously don't love him. He'd be better off living at the ditch (a small fort the kids in the neighborhood built near a ditch). I reminded him that he would be cold and hungry and he insisted that is friends would bring him stuff. This is really hard for me. I really don't know how to help him see how much he is truly loved and that he was being punished because we do love him and want him to be a better person. Any ideas I'd welcome them:)

"What would Jesus do?"

well sis,
that gave me a great laugh when I read what he thought Jesus would do. I have three suggestions..
1. WWDMD- ask donnie and marie! haha
2. Let him experience the pain, consequences and so forth.. even let him run away, he'll come back. He probably won't make it very far. I was a couple years younger than he is now when I tried to run away in AZ, I took a glass of water, and a change of clothes in a grocery bag and walked down the street, then I got scared for 2 reasons- 1 because I didn't know where to go, and 2, what if I wasn't let back in. It turns out- I don't think anyone noticed I had left... and I got over the urge really quickly.
3. Maybe when he's in that moment and saying those things and even feeling like no one understands, or that he was right, and shouldn't be punished, I'm wondering, what if you sit down next to him and ask him if it would be alright if you said a prayer together, and ask Heavenly Father what He thinks should be done, what his discipline or punishment should be- ect.. and see if inviting the spirit helps him to get control of his (pre-teen hormones and feelings) and is able to find some truth to his hard day.
well, just my serious suggestion on the 3rd, one and the others- I hope you just laugh..
LOVE YOU ALL.. you're going great as his mom,
love

I meant doing great.. eh.. you get me though :)
Ok I'm LOL!!! But my heart is also right with you on this!!! Been right in your same shoes!!! How old is your son? Can't remember? I do have some ideas for you but didn't want to type them all.Plus I should be sleeping!! Not enough hours in a day!!!! I will have to call you!! We should cry on each others shoulder together!! Just remember it is a stage and this to will pass!! Plus You are a great MOM!!!!!! He is lucky to have you as his Mom!!!! Someday he will realize it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miss you!!!!
Prepare yourself Mels - this sounds like a precursor to the teenage moods. It's the pits. We all hate them and just stick to your guns. It'll all come out good - he's pretty tenacious to cry for two hours. That sounds like even my five year old! You are doing great!
I wish I knew the answers! I am trying to find them myself with a pre-teen also! Aren't they fun? Wouldn't it be nice if our children each came with their own handbook? LOL. Anyway, just know the moods are normal. Our pediatrician told us to expect having a two year old again. Trantums, mood swings, life is not fair attitude, etc., etc. Yippee!! If I find something that works good with J, I'll let you know! And if you find the secret - pass it my way! Hang in there! You guys are awesome parents!
